After Window Installation: A Homeowner’s Checklist

after window installation

A careful walk-through after window installation can catch small problems while they’re still easy to fix, and the paperwork you collect now will matter for years. Once the crew has packed up, it’s tempting to assume everything is perfect, but a few minutes of checking is worth it.

This checklist covers what to inspect before the installers leave, what to look for in the first weeks, and which documents to keep. If you’re still planning your project, start with our window replacement services.

Walk Through Every Window

Do this walk-through right after window installation, ideally with the installers still on site, so anything that needs adjusting is handled right away:

  • Open, close, and lock each window several times. Sashes should move smoothly and latch without force.
  • Look over the glass and frames for scratches, chips, or cracks.
  • Confirm each window matches your order: size, color, grid pattern, glass type, and operating style.
  • Check that screens are included and fit properly, and that all hardware, such as cranks, handles, and locks, is in place.
  • Make sure old materials and debris were removed from the work area.

Check the Seal, Trim, and Surrounding Wall

The material around the window frame is just as important as the window itself:

  • Inside, look for gaps between the frame and the trim, and between the trim and the wall.
  • Outside, check that the caulk bead is continuous, with no skipped spots or gaps.
  • Run your hand around each frame on a windy day to feel for moving air.
  • After the first heavy rain or snowmelt, check the wall and trim around each window for moisture or stains.

Gaps found after window installation usually trace back to how the window was set in the opening, which is why professional window installation matters as much as the product itself.

Remove Protective Film and Clean Carefully

New windows often come with protective film or stickers on the glass and frame. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing them, and don’t leave them in place for months, since sun exposure can make the adhesive harder to remove. Keep any label the installer or manufacturer says should stay on until a final inspection or sign-off.

Clean the glass and frames with mild soap and water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads or scrapers that can scratch the surface.

Keep Your Paperwork and Labels

Gather your documents now, while they’re easy to find: the contract and invoice, the product model and specifications, the warranty terms, and any registration steps the manufacturer requires. Some warranties ask you to register within a set period, so check the paperwork. Take photos of each window after installation. If your project needed a permit or inspection, keep the sign-off, and ask your installer if you’re unsure whether it did.

Most energy efficient windows carry an NFRC label that lists performance ratings. Photograph it before it comes off so you have a record of the numbers.

ENERGY STAR’s explanation of the NFRC label covers the five ratings printed on it, including U-factor, solar heat gain, and air leakage.

What’s Normal in the First Few Weeks

Some things that look odd are usually harmless:

  • Fresh caulk needs time to cure before it can be painted, so ask your installer how long to wait.
  • Light condensation on the inside of the glass on very cold mornings can happen when indoor humidity is high. It doesn’t mean the window has failed.
  • Moisture trapped between the panes is different. It means the seal has failed, and it should be reported.

When to Call Your Installer

after window installationContact the company that did the work promptly, in writing and with photos, if you notice:

  • A sash that sticks, binds, or won’t lock
  • Visible gaps or drafts around a frame
  • Water around a window after rain or snowmelt
  • Cracked or damaged glass
  • Fog or moisture between the panes

Reporting problems early keeps small issues from turning into larger ones and keeps your warranty record clear.
